The next step in the evolution of ContractPal videos is a unique animated style to screenshots and websites that I created. This Debt Relief video was the first time I implemented camera movements along the screenshots and images in 3D space. Most of the video contains screenshots, so I had to find a way to make them more interesting. After all, who wants to watch someone click through a software application unless they specifically search for a tutorial? I came up with this stylized treatment of screenshots from inspiration I received while watching Ooyala and AtTask videos. The screenshots just popped more and somehow lifted off the page. The continual movement kept the viewer’s attention and the maintained the video’s momentum. All in all, this is one of ContractPal’s favorite video I’ve produced for them.

Sometime in 2011, the Salt Lake City DealerTrack DMS marketing team approached me about directing a series of DMS videos that were branded and stylized to match their current marketing campaign. We were inspired by Apple’s famous simplistic and polished interviews on infinite white and Xbox Kinect’s fun and graphical game videos. The marketing team wrote the scripts, I designed the template and style that would later be used for all the videos. I also created an opening animation, other animations and a credentialing effect that we used on all the videos.

This first video (the overview) was the longest and most demanding, but I feel it came together rather nicely. Besides, if I never stretch myself to meet the new challenges, how will I ever become a better filmmaker?

The first video I ever directed for ContractPal was this one – a general overview of the company and it’s services and solutions.

The project was challenging from the get go, but I welcomed the challenge and was up to the task. It was literally the first time I had ever used After Effects. I basically learned it on the fly as I created the project from scratch. Rowd and I went through several iterations and cuts of the project, before we settled on the one you see in the video. I am very grateful for the ongoing work with ContractPal and proud of my work on this video. I think it was the start of several outstanding pieces of work to come.

In 2011, BYUtv hired me to edit a few TV episodes for their new show, “Fresh Take.” I worked at BYU Broadcasting in Provo, Utah with Fresh Take producer Judy Simmons and edited on Final Cut Pro. My main assignment was to edit all B-roll footage, street interviews, and archived material that supplemented the studio talk show. It was a valuable learning experience that I am grateful I had the opportunity to pursue. BYUtv has completely transformed and modernized the quality, style, and themes of their TV shows to keep up with today’s standards. I was very impressed with the production value of each Fresh Take episode and glad to present my work here.

This particular episode is about the 80′s Polynesian pop band called The Jets. I edited the archive concert scene of The Jets as a band. I’ve always enjoyed editing to music and rhythm so this was a fun project for me that I hope to have more of. The video below is only the scenes I edited.
In 2011, DealerTrack celebrated their 10th year publicly trading on NASDAQ and as part of that celebration they had the ringing the bell ceremony which occurs at the end of a trading day. DealerTrack asked me to produce a video that could be displayed on the giant NASDAQ screen in Times Square. Without hesitation, I accepted the project. A video I created playing on a huge screen in Times Square – who would pass that up. But the project was not without challenges. My first challenge – the screen had a vertical orientation, which is not native to video, so I had to create a custom project to match the screen. My second challenge – the screen had randomly placed windows since it was a wall not just a screen. Luckily the NASDAQ video team had an overlay grid that gave me the precise location of each window. With those challenges in mind, DealerTrack and I began brainstorming.

We came up with the concept you now see in the video. Of course the video showcases cars. DealerTrack is in the automotive industry so that was an obvious choice. I created the entire video in After Effects with tons of stills of cars, text, and the DT logo. Each car you see in the video was individually tweaked and programmed to move at a certain speed and stop/start at certain key moments. Also, the cars were perfectly aligned so they drove between windows without hitting them. The DealerTrack logo drops in time with the cars’ movement, which I had to fine tune to make it work. There were plenty of details I had to pay special attention to, but in the end the final product was well worth the time and effort.[Motion Graphics Artist, Sofware: Adobe After Effects]
